Why is downtime-by-reason more valuable than a simple stopped signal?

Direct answer
A stopped signal tells you that capacity was lost. A reason tells you where to act—setup, material, maintenance, inspection, tooling, staffing, or another repeatable cause. When the same reason appears dozens of times, the conversation moves from anecdote to a measurable improvement opportunity.
Practical checkpoint
Use a short, mutually understandable reason list first; add detail only when the team can act differently because of it.
